Did You Know?
Our city’s motto is “Where History and Progress Meet.”
Prairie Forest Preserve is one of the largest and best preserved prairies in the Midwest. In 1976 mayor Richard Truitt discovered the prairie during one of his frequent walks in the open land west of the city.
According to Friends of the West Chicago City Museum, so many rail lines converged in the area that the original name was Junction. The name was later changed to West Chicago which holds the distinction of being Illinois’s first town formed as a result of the railroads.
Chicago’s theater community is especially well-known for improvisational comedy. The Compass Players and The Second City were the first organized improvisational comedy troupes in Chicago. Many of the original cast of Saturday Night Live came from The Second City.
Although conflicting stories describe the origin of Chicago’s nickname “The Windy City” there is no doubt that it is one of the most well-known.
